Noise and a hellish atmosphere. Bad blue boys are lurking in Pilsen

Zagreb (from our correspondent) – But back to the atmosphere, which is mainly provided by the world-famous Bad Blue Boys (BBB). This is the designation for ultras Dinamo, which was created in the mid-80s. Fans of the most successful Croatian band were inspired by the film Bad Boys, known in the Czech Republic as Zlí hoši.

At Maksimir, they are always on the north stand behind the goal, they have their own anthem, and the distinguishing sign is, among other things, blue flares. “It’s not just the boiler that fans, but really everyone. The atmosphere is very unpleasant for the opponent,” explains Petržela. “It will definitely be busy,” expects Pilsen midfielder Pavel Šulc, who should be one of the team’s leaders in the Conference League on Thursday.

According to Petržela, Pilsen carefully prepared for the atmosphere in 2019. “On the other hand, we were experienced and knew what we were getting into. I don’t want to say that we were completely taken aback, but of course the match itself is different than the video or the narrative,” he recalls.

At that time, Marek Bakoš, the current assistant to coach Miroslav Koubek, also jumped in for the final half hour. For those who have never experienced such a football environment, he can only help with his experience.

But it is very difficult. “The players can get an idea of how unpleasant the environment will be, but what matters in the final is what they have experienced in their own careers. It doesn’t matter if they play in Croatia, Slavia or Sparta. Everyone has to go through difficult situations and it is up to individuals how they deal with Dinamo,” explains Bakoš.

“They have to play, they can’t be lazy. As soon as these teams sense a chance, they don’t let you breathe and want to load you as much as possible. If they see that the opponent is afraid of them, they can take full advantage of it. Viktorka must not allow this. It is an advantage that the boys can tell them what the match in the stands can look like,” Petržela emphasizes.

Bad Blue Boys are among the really problematic fan groups for the general football public. We could count many incidents over the last few years, the most recent one had fatal consequences. At the beginning of August, before the match of the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League in Athens, one of the Greeks died in a fight between the ultras of the home team AEK, Dinamo and the hooligans of Panathinaikos.

The Greek police subsequently arrested 105 people, most of whom were Croats. The match had to be postponed. However, the attacker has not yet been identified, the court has charged 103 suspects, including 97 Croatian citizens. The charges also include assault and unlawful possession and use of explosive material. But it is likely that murder charges will be dropped for most of them as the investigation progresses.

After this incident, Dinamo supporters cannot go to away matches for the whole season, but this does not rule out that the hard core will travel to their beloved club. BBB are not only active in football, they are also supposed to have considerable political influence and long fingers when dealing with high-ranking state or city officials.

But many times they have also been marked or awarded as loyal fans who are able to support their club above standard, especially during away matches. On February 24, 2022, they were also one of the first supporters to publicly show their support for Ukraine, which was invaded by the Russian army that day.

Bad Blue Boys can do almost anything. From positive gestures to creating an electrifying atmosphere in stadiums to actions that do not only belong in the football world.
