Meeting the Standards: IJF 2023-2024 Judo Kimonos for Competition

The International Judo Federation sets the standards for 2023-2024 IJF judo kimonos in competition. These standards are reviewed regularly to ensure fairness. Fighting Films offers two ranges of competition kimonos meeting these criteria. It is crucial that the size of the Judogi ordered is correct and meets the specified parameters. These standards are mandatory for international competitions. Local federations may have more flexible regulations, but not vice versa.

The characteristics of kimonos

The weight

IJF standards impose a very specific weight for all kimonos. For a judogi to meet standards for international competitions, it must weigh between 650 and 750 g/m² of fabric. Judogis are lighter and more flexible than in the past. The blend of cotton and polyester allows you to lose weight while maintaining the strength of the fabric.

The color of the judogi

The standards for IJF 2023-2024 judo kimonos are also strict on the authorized color. Indeed, judo kimonos are traditionally white. But there are also blue judo kimonos.

But the choice of the color of the judogi for the manufacturer is not so simple, the white must be white or off-white. For blue judogis, the requirements are even higher, each judogi must have a color number between number 18-4051TCX (TPX) and number 18-4039TCX (TPX) on the Pantone color index.

As our kimonos meet IJF standards, these requirements are indeed respected.

The different types of weaving

The upper part of the kimono jacket must be woven in Sashiko (grain of rice).

The lower part of the jacket, or the skirt must be lighter and simply woven with diamond shapes, always in Sashiko.

Reinforcements on the kimono

The jacket, like the judogi pants, must have reinforcements in very specific places.

On the jacket, reinforcements must be present on the shoulders, chest and armpits.

On the pants, it is at the knees and the side openings that the reinforcements should appear.

IJF rules for belts

Brown and black judo belts used for competitions must be made of cotton only, measure between 4 and 4.5cm in width, 4 and 5mm in thickness and between 8 and 13 lines of stitching.

As with kimonos, they must display the IJF logo.

The sleeves must always reach the base of the wrist, the maximum tolerance is 1 cm.

The space between the arm and the inside of the sleeve should be between 10 and 15 cm. Same for the legs, the space must be between 10 and 15 cm.
