Ice Hockey World Cup: Germany wins fifth tournament game against Kazakhstan

The German national ice hockey team clearly won the fifth tournament game at the World Cup in the Czech Republic against Kazakhstan 8:2 (2:1, 3:0, 2:1) and can now hope to reach the quarter-finals. With nine points in five games, Germany can hardly be pushed out of the first four places in Group B.

In the preliminary round games, Germany won against Slovakia and Latvia. However, the national team had to admit defeat to the USA and Sweden. The remaining opponents France and Poland have a significantly worse record in the tournament so far.

Maksymilian Szuber (2nd minute), Parker Tuomie (3rd), John-Jason Peterka (22nd), Lukas Kälble (36th), Frederik Tiffels (55th) and Maximilian Kastner (59th) each scored a goal against Kazakhstan for the national team. Lukas Reichel scored twice (29th and 51st minutes). For the first time in the tournament, national coach Harold Kreis did not change his team – the same formation was used that had previously won 8-1 against Latvia. Roman Startschenko scored for Kazakhstan to make it 1:2 (8th) and Artjom Korolyov made it 2:6 (52nd).

The national team was able to improve its previous negative goal tally to 24:19. The next opponent is Poland on Saturday, the last group game takes place on Tuesday against France. “We just want to build on the win,” said Peterka after the game, referring to the game against Poland. “Today we delivered a solid performance and we want to build on that.” National coach Kreis was also pleased: “Overall, of course, I’m very, very satisfied,” he said. “The boys managed it well and had the game under control.”

The Ice Hockey World Cup is currently being held for the 87th time. Germany is the reigning vice world champion; the national team lost 2-5 in the final against Canada in 2023. Germany has never been world champion. Last year’s participation in the final was the third after 1930 and 1953. Canada is the record champion with 28 titles.
