Matthias Furlani vince he Men’s Rising Star 2023. The award – part of the Golden Tracks – is awarded annually by European Athletics to the best emerging European athlete.
The important recognition, awarded in the 2023 edition in Lithuania, comes at the end of a season crowned with excellent results: in August the athlete born in Marino managed to win the gold medal at the Under 20 European Championships in Jerusalem. In Israel, Mattia Furlani, achieving a jump of 8.23 metres, managed to surpass the European Under 20 record, which had stood for 36 years. Also in 2023 he won silver at the European Games in Chorzov in Poland.
After Andrew Howe, Mattia Furlani is the second Italian athlete to win the Men’s Rising Star.
The two athletes are linked by a deep mutual respect: “Andrew is a star. I gave him the last compliments because he is about to become a father. He was fundamental to my career, in some ways I’m following the same path as him. He always writes to me, he is a big fan of mine and I will always be his fanreports the European champion on his return from Vilnius to the microphones of Atletica TV, the information channel of the Italian Athletics Federation.
The prestigious Men’s Rising Star projects the Fiamme Oro athlete towards two important competitions: the European Championships in Rome in 2024 and the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
“Let’s say that 2023 was a nice introduction to 2024: these races gave me great experience for future ones. Gli europei 2024 ndr, it is the event I look forward to the most, it will be an extraordinary event where, among other things, my favorite team plays” reports Mattia Furlani to Sky Sport shortly after receiving the award in Vilnius.
After Rome, Paris will follow. As reported by Atletica TV, Furlani is already focused on the Olympics and anticipates his intentions: “I want to get there in good shape. Before that I will do the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, so I will dedicate myself to the indoor season. You probably won’t see me in the long jump in the first competition between January and February: next year I will add speed races, you will see me more often in the 60m and then outdoors in the 100m and 200m, aware that speed is the basis of the long distance runner, unlike when I was a long distance runner and it wasn’t the priority. However, I am sure that my path must be that of a long jumper. I think it’s the right choice for my career.”
