Makkabi Berlin: Football game ends without incident

The football match between the Jewish club TuS Makkabi Berlin and Berolina Stralau, which received much attention following the escalation of the Middle East conflict, ended without incident.

For fear of anti-Semitic incidents, the police took protective measures around the game in the state cup on Sunday. Around ten police officers were on site and stewards checked the bags of the more than 300 spectators.

Makkabi Berlin won the match in the third main round 4:1. Before kick-off there was a minute’s silence for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Israel, and some players wore mourning ribbons. “We as a multicultural team, which also includes Muslims and Jews, definitely want to keep playing and not let ourselves be defeated,” the club had explained in advance. However, the Maccabi youth team games scheduled for this weekend were canceled.

The terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on Israel with over 1,300 deaths so far and the harsh Israeli reaction in the Gaza Strip have not only brought international sport to a standstill in Israel.

“We have long sensed a high level of danger at the moment when things escalate in the Middle East. Especially in the football sector, with lower-class teams and A and B youth sectors, with opponents with a Muslim-Arab background,” said Makkabi Germany President Alon Meyer on Deutschlandfunk.
