The winner of the Ballon d’Or has been announced. According to Spanish Sport, the votes have been counted and Lionel Messi will receive the prestigious award for the eighth time in his career on October 30.

The Argentine superstar receives the award for the role he played in Argentina’s World Cup victory. Given that the previous Ballon d’Or was awarded in October 2022, performances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will count towards the 2023 Golden Ball.

Messi was already the record holder of the ‘best footballer of the year’ award. The right winger and midfielder also won the prize in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.

In addition to the World Cup, Messi also managed to win the French title with Paris Saint-Germain. He scored 16 goals and as many assists in 32 Ligue 1 matches.

With the election he trumps other stars such as Erling Braut Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne. Both were crucial for Manchester City, who won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. Haaland even broke the record for most Premier League goals in a season (36).

Sport also reports that Aitana Bonmatí will receive the Ballon d’Or for women. The Spanish player won the world title with her country in Australia and New Zealand last summer.

The Kopa Trophy will also be awarded on October 30, but it is not yet known who will receive that prize. Xavi Simons is the only Dutch person nominated for the prize of ‘best talent of the year’. The prizes are awarded by football magazine France Football.
