Jannik Sinner Reminisces on Epic Victory over Carlos Alcaraz in Miami Masters Semi-Finals

One of Jannik Sinner’s best victories this season was the one he achieved against Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the Miami Masters 1000. The Italian wanted to remember what that match was like against a player with whom he has already formed one of the great rivalries on the circuit.

A match between Jannik Sinner y Carlos Alcaraz It can only mean one thing: spectacle. The matches that both have played have never disappointed and have always been very close. The Italian is the one who leads that H2H by 4-3, but things can change from one moment to the next. After his defeat in the semifinals of Indian Wells against the Murcian, Sinner took his “vendetta” by beating him in the semis of Miami some days after. The current number 4 in the ranking (number 11 at that time) defeated a current number 1 for the first time after an epic comeback, which makes the victory more unique.

“It was very windy in Miami and it was not easy to play. I remember the first match against Laslo Djere, it was very hard, but I managed to win it. Afterwards I felt very good against Grigor, Rublev and all the others,” the Italian recalled for the ATP.

Different conditions than in Indian Wells

“I felt good and confident. In my head I knew I had lost to Carlos in Indian Wells. Obviously it was very difficult to play against him, but I had time to improve and also the tactical part, which was much better than in Indian Wells. The service was a little different compared to Indian Wells, there it had more bounce and in Miami it was faster. That was better for me because I play a little flatter. “I just try to improve and win game by game and face it again and again.”

Aggressive from start to finish

“I started very very well and managed to break his serve in the first moments. I just tried to play my tennis and play aggressively from the beginning of the match. I served really well and in the end it was a very tough match.”

A great point, but Alcaraz ended up breaking his serve

“In the first set I was up a break and we were playing an important game. Then Carlos made a drop shot, I returned it, stayed behind the line and made a cross-court pass. The reaction showed it, the crowd and everyone, but I ended up losing the game. It was a good point, but he broke my serve. We both had several chances to take the first set, but he managed to change the course and that is what I was trying to do.”

Increased confidence for the end of the match

“I was serving at 15-40 (second set and second game after breaking Carlos) and I was serving very well. After winning that game my confidence started to improve and the course of the game changed a little. At the beginning of the third set, Carlos began to suffer physically a little and I tried to give more of myself. When I was 5-2, I just tried to win the last service game. Seeing my team’s reaction meant a lot.”

“Each party has its own story”

“All the games we have played have been of a high level, it is a great rivalry. I lost in the final to Daniil, but it was a very good week. This reflects that each party has its own history and is different.”
