Hertha BSC Lifts Suspension on Goalkeeper Gersbeck after Social Commitment Promise

Keeper will be “socially committed”

Hertha BSC has decided to give its goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck a second chance. After the violent incident during the training camp in Austria has been dealt with in court, the 28-year-old’s suspension will be lifted. The Bundesliga relegated team announced this on Monday. The keeper, who was only brought back from Karlsruhe under a clause in the summer, will return to team training during the international break and will therefore train again with coach Pál Dárdai’s professional squad.

Thomas E. Herrich, Managing Director of Hertha BSC, explained: “Since the case against Marius Gersbeck was dropped, it has been clear that there will be no criminal conviction. Marius has also shown insight and remorse to us as a club, but we continue to condemn his off-duty misconduct in the strongest terms and, of course, have never lost sight of the fact that the injured party suffered serious injuries. In the past few days we have consulted with our committees and discussed this.”

The club boss continued: “Marius gets a second chance. His suspension is lifted, but he receives a warning and a hefty fine from the club. In the foreseeable future, Marius will again take part in the training of the licensed team under certain conditions. In addition, Marius has committed himself to becoming socially active from now on in order to pass on his experiences from this misconduct.”

Hertha BSC: Goalkeeper Gersbeck does not have to go to prison after the incident

Gersbeck does not have to go to prison after the incident during the training camp. After admitting guilt and apologizing to the victim, the 28-year-old was sentenced to a so-called fine of 40,000 euros in the Salzburg regional court. The Salzburg public prosecutor’s office had brought charges of serious bodily harm, which could have resulted in a prison sentence of between six months and five years. The Berlin second division goalkeeper is now not considered to have a criminal record. “I deeply regret the incident. “I would like to personally apologize to the victim,” Gersbeck said right at the start of the trial. He then apologized to the 22-year-old Austrian with a handshake and added: “I hope that you don’t have any consequential damage.”

The victim of the nighttime brawl in Zell am See on July 16th accepted Gersbeck’s apology, whereupon the judge suggested the diversion with the monetary requirement as provided for in Austrian law. According to reports, Gersbeck had previously agreed with the victim to pay compensation in order to avoid possible civil litigation. The verdict that has now been passed is not yet legally binding, but an objection by the public prosecutor is considered unlikely.

The serious brawl occurred during Hertha BSC’s training camp. The goalkeeper punched and kicked the victim. As a result, the 22-year-old suffered a fracture of the orbital floor, a fracture of the maxillary sinus wall and an eyelid hematoma, even if only through negligence, as the public prosecutor announced. Hertha BSC suspended the goalkeeper after the incident.
