Flechas Rosas Malagueñas: Archery Project Brings Hope and Healing to Breast Cancer Patients

Every Friday, six women from Cártama who suffer from breast cancer have an appointment at the Paco Vargas El Lata Sports Center in Sexmo, to play archery. From 5:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., six women meet to participate in a project that combines this sports practice with the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients. This project, called ‘Flechas Rosas Malagueñas’, is an inter-club initiative that seeks not only to improve the mood of women affected by this disease, but also to promote the physical and mental benefits of practicing archery.

One of the sports technicians at Arco Club Malaka and one of the organizers of this project, Daniel Gámez de la Hoz, says that ‘Flechas Rosas’ is a free interclub project aimed at women from any Malaga club. “The objective is for women who suffer from breast cancer to be able to develop an activity, to be motivated, to participate in activities,” says Gámez de la Hoz. The club, which has a solid base of young archers who have gone on to compete at an international level, has expanded its activities to include the participants of ‘Flechas Rosas’ on Fridays in Cártama.

«We start on Friday, October 13 and throughout the entire season the idea is for them to participate, learn and enjoy the activity. This activity is both for women who are going through the disease or who have already overcome it,” says Gámez de la Hoz. In addition, the Malaka Club gives classes on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Malaga at the Manuel Lloreda archery range, where they have 14 places.

Physical state

«In addition to improving your mood, it benefits your physical condition because it has been proven that the use of the bow facilitates lymphoma drainage with the vibrations generated by the bow in the arm. They also work a lot on the back, breathing and especially the mind. 80% of archery is in the head. “It is an activity of concentration,” argues the technician. At the moment, the project has started with six women who practice this sport every Friday, but they intend to expand its reach.

‘Flechas Rosas Malagueñas’ is part of the program of the Royal Spanish Archery Federation (RFETA) called ‘Woman, Bow and Health Project’. The initiative is organized by the Archery School of the CD Arco Club Malaka, in collaboration with the Andalusian Archery Federation and the Sports area of the Cártama City Council. This initiative is an example of how the community and sports clubs can come together to provide support to people facing health challenges, while promoting the importance of physical activity and recovery through sporting activities such as archery. .
