El Salvador Shines in Badminton and Rowing at Pan American Games in Santiago 2023

Badminton and rowing continue, in Santiago 2023. The player Uriel Canjura advanced to the round of 16; and the rowers Adriana Escobar and Roberto López will compete in repechages. In teams, there were defeats

A quiet day, without surprises, but with some good results for El Salvador in terms of the enthusiasm to continue moving forward in the Pan American Games in Santiago 2023. This was the debut of several national athletes in Chile, with outstanding performances in badminton and in rowing, sports in which we aspire to go for more in search of continental medals.

The badminton player, Uriel Canjura, advanced to the round of 16 phase of the men’s singles. He got his first victory against the Mexican Job Castillo, 2-1 (21-19, 17-21 and 21-10). This Sunday, the native of Suchitoto will face the coffee grower Miguel Quirama, for the place in the quarterfinals.

“It was a tight and long game. All the games against him (Castillo) are difficult and always three sets. He showed that he is a worthy opponent and this victory gives me confidence to face the next game with more enthusiasm,” said Canjura.

In badminton, Javier Alas competed, who lost to the Argentine Nicolás Oliva (11-21, 8-21); and Manuel Mejía against the Dominican Yonatan Linarez (21-14, 21-13). In women’s, Gabriela Barrios fell to Argentina’s Ailen Oliva (9-21, 18-21); Daniela Hernández with the Trinidadian Chequeda De Boulet (9-21, 21-10, 23-21); and Fátima Centeno against the Mexican Haramara Gaitán (13-21, 18-21).

There was a contest in mixed doubles, but the Salvadorans Mejía and Barrios were eliminated from the round of 32 by Ecuador (2-0); while Alas and Centeno played against Peru (at the close of this note). Meanwhile this Sunday, there will be competition in men’s and women’s doubles.

For its part, rowing also gave its mark, placing the two national athletes in repechages in search of finals. Adriana Escobar from Cuscatle was fifth in her heat in a pair of women’s short sculls (W1X), series three. She finished with a time of 9:05.92. Escobar will be in playoff two this day, looking for the finals.

In men, Roberto Carlos López finished sixth in his heat (series two) in a pair of men’s short rows (M1X), with a time of 7:54.45. He will compete for a place in the final in playoff two.

Finals B in the waters

Swimming had the same competition, but the nationals were only able to reach the B finals. In this case, the tritons Fátima Portillo, Ariana Valle and Xavier Ventura finished in fifth and sixth positions, in their various events.

Portillo competed in the women’s 200 meter butterfly (2:2.28); Ventura in the men’s 200 butterfly (2:07.64); and Valle in the women’s 400 freestyle (4:31.69). Meanwhile, without reaching the finals, there was Elisa Funes, in the 100 meters breaststroke, where she was sixth in her series (1: 13.85); José Campo, in the men’s 400 freestyle, finished seventh in his heat (4:25.68); and Elías Segovia, in the men’s 100 breaststroke, was third in his heat (1:09.26). This day, the water competitions on Chilean soil will continue.

In the weights, for his part, the national Ramón Cruz competed, who finished in 12th place out of 18, with a total of 273 kilos, after lifting 120 in the snatch (one attempt) and 153 in the clean and jerk (equally one attempt).

And in sports shooting, no blue and white athlete made it to the finals. In men’s rapid fire pistol, Jorge Muñoz (276) and Jorge Pimentel (273) finished in 14th and 15th positions; women’s 10m air rifle, Ana Ramírez (611.2) and Johanna Pineda (605.2) were 19 and 24; and, in the same event, but in men, Israel Gutiérrez (616.6) and Diego Santamaría (612.2) finished 11 and 21. Hard team level

As is already known, the Pan American level is strong, but the Salvadorans are trying to give their best version in Santiago 2023. And, in team sports, there was no joyous debut. 3×3 basketball and beach volleyball did not go through defeats this Saturday, but this Sunday they will continue with activity.

In the 3×3, the girls of the National Team faced Colombia and ended with a 4-17 loss, in the group stage (B), at the Spanish stadium. The best in points was Adriana Rivas, according to the statistics on the official website of the Pan American Games. In addition, she was the player with the longest time on court (9:35).

As for the men’s team, the National Team is part of group A, and had double participation. First thing in the morning, they played against Mexico, against whom they put up a fight, but it was not enough and they closed with a 22-12 loss. With four points each, there were the Cuscatlecos Pablo Figueroa, William Merino and Emilio Abullarade, with more minutes of play for Merino (6:46). Their second game was another tough loss to the USA, 22-8.

For their part, in the beach volleyball, the Salvadorans Yvonne Soler and Laura Molina played, who were stopped by Brazil, with a score of 2-0 (21-9, 21-6), in group C. In men, the story It was similar. The nationals Armando Guatemala and Franklin Flores lost against Brazil, 2-0 (21-7, 21-13), for C.
