Disappointing Performance: Bremen Team Criticized After Defeat at Darmstadt

After the weak 2:4 at newly promoted Darmstadt, the mood of everyone in Bremen was literally in the basement. This also applies to the person responsible for professional football, who did not spare any criticism of the team’s performance.

“This performance over 70, 75 minutes is not the standard we have. To be honest, I don’t have the right answer to that.” While it was particularly difficult for him to explain why his team had such a poor performance on Sunday afternoon, Clemens Fritz had a much easier time describing it. The shortcomings that the head of Bremen’s licensing department summarized in a long list after the sobering 2:4 at newly promoted Darmstadt 98 were all too clearly visible.

Deficits in all parts of the team

“I can list everything: lack of intensity, lack of speed of action, lack of sharpness in duels,” said the 42-year-old with what he saw. “Too much space is left for the opponent to take the ball. There are too many simple mistakes, too many passing errors.” Fritz didn’t want to pin it on individual players, some of whom had performed far below their potential at the Böllenfalltor.

He found deficits in all parts of the team. “We were certainly too far away at the back. We also had coordination problems at the front. We weren’t there in terms of occupying the space, or in terms of our passing quality. If you don’t secure the balls, you can’t score goals or be dangerous up front. It was from A very, very poor performance for all of us.”

Two faces at home and away

Like coach Ole Werner, Werder’s professional boss also puzzled over the two faces that the team recently showed at home and away. “If you look at it like this now: We played a good game at home against Mainz (won 4-0, editor), then you go to Heidenheim and lose.” As it is now, a few weeks ago it was 2:4.

“You play at home against Cologne, play a decent game (won 2-1, editor), go to Darmstadt and get four goals again. That’s something that we clearly have to work on. I’m assuming that the boys are self-critical enough. We’re all in the same boat, and of course we’re all disappointed.”

Keita alone can’t fix it

The search for solutions inevitably leads to top purchase Naby Keita, whose substitutions in the last two games changed the team’s game significantly positively. However, Fritz’s euphoria is too great. “One player alone can’t do it. We have eleven of them on the pitch, plus those on the bench, who are also important when it matters.”

Keita is still looking for his top physical condition. After apparently overcoming his adductor problems, he was plagued by symptoms of illness in the run-up to the Darmstadt game. Fritz urges caution: “Naby did it well when he came in. But he just needs his rhythm. Every minute of the game is good for him. We all want things to go forward. But we all have to sort it out. Nabi can do it alone “It doesn’t work.”

Now there is a training week “in which we have a lot to work on,” said Fritz. And then a tough opponent, TSG Hoffenheim, is coming to Bremen at the weekend. There, where you have to make things right after the away defeat with your own fans behind you. It remains difficult, Fritz knows that too. “We didn’t say anything else. A lot is still in development. We also had the team together late, there were reasons for that. But we have a squad that can develop. It’s also a question of time.”
