Defending champion Daniil Medvedev failed surprisingly early at the ATP Masters in Shanghai. Five days after his semi-final victory over Alexander Zverev at the tournament in Beijing, the Russian had to admit defeat to number 26 seed Sebastian Korda 6:7 (8:10), 2:6 in the third round.
“I feel great, I played an incredible match,” said the 23-year-old Korda, who had increasingly unnerved Medvedev. The world number three smashed his racket on the floor in anger in the second set.
German players are no longer represented at the $10,046,270 hard court tournament in China. Olympic champion Zverev (Hamburg), like Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) and Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe), was eliminated in the second round. For Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) the final stop was already on lap one.
