Cycling: “I had become a shadow of myself”, Nacer Bouhanni retires

At 33, Nacer Bouhanni decided to change direction. On his Instagram account, he announced that he was ending his career. The Vosges runner will therefore not be in the peloton in 2024. A first since 2011, when the sprinter signed his first professional license with the FDJ. This decision is not surprising since he was at the end of his contract with his team Arkéa-Samsic, which had recruited Arnaud Démare.

On Instagram, Nacer Bouhanni announces his decision: “Dear friends, loved ones, supporters, I announce my retirement after 27 years of competitive cycling. I have been thinking carefully about this decision for several months. I started cycling at the age of 6, and it very quickly became a great passion. »

The French champion also looked back on one of the hardest moments of his career: “After my serious accident last year which cost me a serious cervical fracture and a very long rehabilitation, I had become the shadow of myself. I fought body and soul to try to regain my level, in vain. »

After a stint in the northern team Cofidis, Nacer Bouhanni ended his career in the Breton team which he joined in 2020. The native of Épinal has 70 victories to his name, including a French champion title in 2012 and three stage victories in the Giro and as many in the Vuelta. On the other hand, he failed to register his name on a stage of the Tour de France.
