Korean badminton men’s doubles pair Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho won a silver medal in the badminton men’s doubles at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho, ranked 15th in the world in badminton men’s doubles, defeated India’s Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Sethi, ranked 3rd in the world, 0 to 2 (18-21, 16- 21) and lost. Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho, who were aiming for the men’s doubles gold medal at the Asian Games 21 years after mobility-utility at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, narrowly failed to win the gold medal.

Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho advanced to the finals in this tournament, including a 2-1 comeback victory over world number two Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang (China) in the round of 16. The initial atmosphere in the finals was good. In the first set, he continued to lead his opponent into making mistakes and took the lead until midway through the game. However, with an 18-15 lead, they gave up 6 points and lost the first set. To make matters worse, there was a situation where Choi Sol-gyu received a warning for raising an objection to the referee over a shuttlecock issue.

Entering the second set, Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho were pushed by the Rankireddy-Seti group throughout. In the end, they were unable to overcome their differences and suffered a complete defeat. Still, Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho won silver medals for the first time in 9 years since Lee Yong-dae and Yoo Yeon-seong at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Kim Won-ho was also recorded as a ‘mother and son’ Asian Games medalist. Kim Won-ho’s mother is Gil Young-ah, a mixed doubles gold medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the current head coach of Samsung Life Insurance’s badminton team. Coach Kim, who conquered the Olympics and World Championships, won silver medals in women’s doubles at the 1990 Beijing and 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games. “I should have seen her win the gold medal (to her mother), but it’s a shame,” Kim Won-ho said after her match. Since she is not done yet, this time she has confidence that she can go even higher in the future. “With this opportunity, she will rise to greater heights,” she pledged.
