CCTV’s Technical Achievements in Broadcasting the Hangzhou Asian Games

On October 8, the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou came to a successful conclusion. On September 25, before the festival, the Technical Bureau of China Central Radio and Television and others jointly held a seminar on ultra-high-definition audio and video communication for the Hangzhou Asian Games. At the meeting, Xu Jin, director of the Taiwan Technical Bureau, introduced some technical aspects of the station in the overall event broadcast of the Hangzhou Asian Games.

CCTV’s resource investment in major events

During the Hangzhou Asian Games, CCTV invested a large amount of broadcasting and distribution resources, including not only the CCTV’s multiple channel frequency resources, but also the CCTV’s integrated media resources, as well as the third-party new media that the CCTV cooperated with. mechanism. In addition, the main station also made full use of the resources of the “Hundred Cities Thousand Screens” project, allowing live broadcasts such as the opening ceremony to be broadcast on outdoor large screens in dozens of cities.

In response to the basic technical requirements for event broadcasting, in terms of ultra-high-definition 8K live broadcast and content production, the main station provides ultra-high-definition 8K live broadcast and production support for the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events. Through the “Hundred Cities Thousand Screens”, it can provide dual Vivid Ultra HD content presentation. In terms of on-site production, an ultra-high-definition 4K unilateral comprehensive production area has been set up to complete live coverage of key content such as the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field, etc. through on-site unilateral resources. The main station has also set up live broadcast mixed areas and on-site commentary seats in venues for gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, shooting, weightlifting, dragon boating, break dancing, e-sports and other events to meet the need for on-site participation. The main station has also enriched new media reporting forms and content presentation methods, and also increased its efforts in vertical screen production and data services.

It is worth noting that for this Asian Games, CCTV not only undertook the production of public signals for the opening and closing ceremonies of the anchor organization, track and field, gymnastics, rock climbing and other events, the CCTV Technical Bureau also specifically designed and built a convergence media production system (Convergence Media Production, referred to as CMP). It is necessary to provide cloud upload, integration, production and distribution capabilities for international radio and television signals, event highlights, etc. It is also necessary to provide cloud distribution technical services for all-media content of events to rights-holding broadcasters, and it is also necessary to provide authorized rights-holding broadcasters with cloud-based distribution technology services. Provide IP streaming signals for new media events.

According to Director Xu, the CMP system mainly consists of two parts, namely the IBC local service and the cloud service platform of the anchor organization. IBC local services include ultra-high-definition signal collection, event recording, integrated media editing and production, daily highlight transmission, event file archiving, virtual backend and core storage services. The cloud service platform of the anchor organization includes functions such as event content retrieval and downloading, streaming media signal distribution, mobile editing and production, and new media cloud director switching services.

In terms of investment in technical equipment, the main station naturally also uses extremely rich resource support. For example, CCTV5 and CCTV16 ultra-high-definition live broadcast studios and interview studios were built in IBC, dozens of sites were opened through the CMG media cloud content production system, and two main and backup 10G Ethernet transmission links were established between Hangzhou and Beijing. We dispatched 5 UHD broadcast trucks, 3 3D sound and surround sound recording trucks, and 4 satellite trucks, and used 4 sets of EFP systems, 3 sets of lightweight production systems, 37 sets of ultra-high-definition ENG and 5G backpacks, and a large number of audio collections Transmission equipment, etc. The Taiwan Technical Bureau also established an edge computing node in Hangzhou and achieved an organic connection with the central cloud of the Beijing headquarters. It also realized real-time sharing of front and rear event materials, event data, and event streaming signals.

The main station’s technical characteristics of broadcasting the Hangzhou Asian Games

The technical features provided by the main station this time can be summarized as follows: large screens can realize ultra-high definition and high-definition simulcast, while small screens can realize HDR and three-dimensional brilliant sound presentation. This is also something that CCTV has explored in the five years since its establishment. Comprehensive application of technical practice results.

Shallow compression technology is also a feature of the main station’s technology. Director Xu pointed out that the application and practice of shallow compression coding technology in the production domain is the main goal of the main station’s technical bureau to promote the construction of a new technology system for “ultra-definition, mobile, and intelligent” media integration. One of the important contents is one of the ways to appropriately save transmission and storage resources, thereby moderately reducing the overall cost of ultra-high-definition content production, and it is also a necessary condition for realizing mobile production of ultra-high-definition content. It has the characteristics of high quality (visually lossless), low complexity, low latency and low iteration damage. In practice, 8K shallow compression codec is deployed in the master control system, a shallow compression encoder is deployed in the single-sided mixed area, and a shallow compression ultra-high-definition editing workstation is deployed in the CMG media cloud.

The comprehensive application of cloud-edge technology is also a technical feature of the Hangzhou Asian Games. Previously, the main station has deployed the entire CMG media cloud production according to the cloud-network integrated technical architecture. This time, the main station has continued the development of the Xi’an Games and The successful practices of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Chengdu Universiade, etc. have still established temporary edge nodes for large events, so that the edge computing nodes can be organically connected to the headquarters central cloud, and can achieve comprehensive interaction of all materials to meet the content of all media According to production needs, cross-domain production and nearby archiving of materials are realized.

Through the “one host and three sides” nodes, it can provide cross-domain distribution of event stream signals, cross-domain transmission of video files, and HD/UHD content production needs. During this Asian Games, it is expected that 3,500 hours of event content can be transmitted and distributed to more than 10 companies International first-level rights-holding broadcasters provide cloud broadcast services.

Audio Vivid is an extremely important technical achievement of the main station. During the Asian Games, the 8K ultra-high-definition EFP audio systems including the ultra-high-definition broadcast trucks and recording trucks it participated in all support three-dimensional sound production and monitoring functions. . During the break dance competition, the main station used VR content to test the head-following technology of the three-dimensional colorful sound in the public signal production. In addition, the public signals for basketball, volleyball, football, badminton and other events that other media organizations are responsible for also have three-dimensional sound production.

This is also the first time that the main station has carried out the practice of e-sports broadcasting of the Asian Games. By learning from the experience of other related media organizations, the main station has established an all-IP e-sports broadcast system, which can meet the needs of large-scale signal exchange and processing capabilities. It has also introduced With the AR packaging rendering technology, its core equipment can also be domestically produced. In the future, the main station also hopes to build a technical route that integrates cloud and network. It must work hard on being lightweight, mobile, and convenient, achieve results in the use of domestic brands, make breakthroughs in presentation, and strive to reduce costs and achieve results.

Finally, Director Xu Jin also said that the broadcast of large-scale international events is a colorful stage for new technologies and new equipment. He hopes that in the future, we can continue to increase the intensity of technical experiments and program practice, relying on the scientific research capabilities of the “National Important” Laboratory, and closely In line with the station’s all-media content production, transmission and distribution needs, it is especially necessary to cooperate with domestic enterprises on the large-scale application of domestic brands to seek common development and achieve success.
