AZ-NEC was permanently stopped just before the end on Sunday due to a serious incident involving Bas Dost. The 34-year-old striker of the visiting club from Nijmegen went to the ground without anyone around. He was taken to hospital when conscious.
When the referee realized that there was a serious situation, he immediately stopped the match. The players from AZ and NEC formed a human shield while doctors took care of him. It is unclear what exactly was going on.
After treatment for a few minutes, Dost was taken away on a stretcher. He was conscious and raised his hand. After brief deliberation, it was decided not to play the final minutes of the match. The match will be played out at a later date.
“The referee quickly said that Bas gave a sign of life and had regained consciousness. He immediately asked to inform his family. When he was carried into the catacombs, his father was also there,” said an emotional NEC director Wilco van Schaik ESPN.
“He sat up for a moment and wanted to say something to his fellow players. It was intense when we saw him leave. After something like that you can no longer continue playing football. Let’s hope he gets stronger again. This is very unreal. Football is no longer important.”

NEC surprisingly led 1-2 thanks to Dost
The match was stopped with a surprising 1-2 score. Dost, of all people, had given NEC a 0-2 lead before halftime with a beautiful goal and an assist. The veteran took a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the tenth minute and moments later served his teammate Magnus Mattsson for the 0-2.
Shortly after halftime, AZ striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who was in top form, made it 1-2, after which there was a great shock when Dost collapsed in the 91st minute.
