Wehen Wiesbaden and Greuther Fürth deliver a wild exchange of blows with eight goals. In between there is a strange interruption. The coach is then fired. Nuremberg is tumbling into the relegation zone, where Magdeburg missed out on an important win.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden released coach Markus Kauczinski a few hours after the relegation candidate’s defeat against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. “In the fight to stay in the league, we have come to the conclusion that we will not achieve our goals in this constellation and that the team needs new impetus for the last games,” said managing director Nico Schäfer, according to an announcement on Sunday. “Remaining in the 2nd Bundesliga is our top priority, so in the end this path was unavoidable.”

Until further notice, the training will be led by assistant coaches Nils Döring and Giuliano Modica.

This was preceded by a spectacular second division game. Coach Alexander Zorniger’s team turned around a 0-2 deficit on Sunday and ultimately prevailed 5-3 (3-2). Three game days before the end of the season, the Fürth team with strong attackers Branimir Hrgota, Armindo Sieb and Dennis Srbeny remain ninth in the table, while the Hessians slipped to third from bottom.

There was a strange four-minute break in the game after half an hour. A deep hole had opened up in the grass on the sideline, which was filled with sand with the active help of referee Patrick Ittrich.

Ivan Prtajin (3rd minute) and Nikolas Agrafiotis (18th), into whom Fürth goalkeeper Jonas Urbig had previously played the ball into his feet, gave the hosts an early lead. Afterwards, the Fürth team showed convincing offensive football and turned the game around with goals from captain Hrgota (26th) and Sieb (38th, 43rd). Striker Srbeny had prepared all three goals.

Wiesbaden came out of the break with more determination, but had to accept a penalty: Hrgota kicked the ball over the crossbar with force (67′). When substitute Oualid Mhamdi had his hand on the ball in the penalty area, there was a penalty on the other side. This time Prtajin equalized for the home team with his 13th goal of the season (72′).

Substitute Lukas Petkov then used a counterattack to give the Franks a somewhat surprising 4-3 win. Tim Lemperle (90.+4) shot completely freely past the Wiesbaden goal shortly before the final whistle, Hrgota (90.+6) then followed up with the goal and thus set the final point.

Magdeburg’s Atik is surprised

Lack of impact, too little speed and ideas. 1. FC Magdeburg missed a decisive draw from the relegation zone in the 2nd Bundesliga in a 1-1 (1-1) draw against bottom-placed VfL Osnabrück. Bryan Teixeira (41st, penalty kick) put the FCM in the lead, Dave Gnaase (44th, penalty kick) equalized. Magdeburg is now in eleventh place with 37 points, six points ahead of the first relegation zone.

“It’s entirely my fault that we don’t have three points,” said a dejected Baris Atik on Sky after the game. “I had two hundred percent. I think with my quality I have to do one of these. I do that normally too. It’s extremely strange for me because I’m actually good in front of goal,” explained the Magdeburg vice-captain.

Nuremberg no longer hits the goal

The even more trembling 1. FC Nürnberg is staggering towards the end of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga after another dismal performance. The 0:1 (0:1) against Karlsruher SC on Sunday was the fourth defeat in a row without a goal of their own. The Franconians, who have not won in six games, are still at risk with 37 points.

The cushion on the relegation place is five points before the last three matchdays, which is not reassuring given the drastic decline in form. Any impulses from coach Cristian Fiél fizzled out. KSC, fifth in the table, unbeaten for six games, performed dominantly in front of 35,162 spectators in the Max Morlock Stadium. The Baden team only scored once through Igor Matanovic (37th minute). The attacker should have made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute after a free kick from a few meters away.

The “Club” acted paralyzed in the first half, without confidence, lacking offensive ideas, and without any decisions. The fans whistled at halftime. Fiél responded with four changes. Things got a little better with Taylan Duman, Sebastian Andersson, Kanji Okunuki and Benjamin Goller. Lukas Schmelzer shot on goal twice and Andersson headed once. Referee Lukas Benen took back a hand penalty for Nuremberg after studying the video (74′).
