VfB Stuttgart Considers Horst Heldt as Potential New Sports Director

It is well known that VfB is looking for a new sports director, and there are currently numerous names circulating that are being considered as candidates. Including an old acquaintance in Stuttgart: Horst Heldt.

At the end of June, the supervisory board of VfB Stuttgart made the decision to install a new sports director this year. The search for a suitable candidate has been ongoing ever since. According to kicker information, the Swabians are looking at Joti Chatzialexiou, the head of the national teams at the DFB – but the 47-year-old is not the only candidate.

As several media outlets consistently report, VfB is also interested in bringing back former manager Horst Heldt. According to “Bild”, the 53-year-old will even present his ideas for the Bundesliga club to the presidential committee on Friday.

However, Heldt personally contradicted this representation in an interview with “Sky”. “I read that I will be at a meeting on Friday – I can assure you that I will not be at any meetings in Stuttgart,” emphasized Heldt.

Of course the goal is to get back into football.

Otherwise there would be “no point in commenting on something like that,” Heldt continued, but he still emphasized: “Of course the goal is to get back into football.” Maybe even in Stuttgart, where he was not only active as a player himself, but also won the German championship as a manager in 2007.

After further positions in various management positions at Schalke 04, Hannover 96 and most recently at 1. FC Köln until 2021, Heldt is currently working as a television expert. In Cologne he already worked with the current Stuttgart CEO Alexander Wehrle.

VfB Stuttgart: An internal solution is also an option

However, the list of candidates for the position of sports director is not limited to Chatzialexiou and Heldt. Among others, Alain Sutter (FC St. Gallen) and Christoph Spycher (Youngs Boys Bern) are said to be on the list.

Another thought experiment from those responsible in Stuttgart: an internal solution. The current sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth could move up and Christian Gentner, head of the licensed player department, could be introduced to the sports director duties.

This option would also offer advantages from a financial perspective, as the cash-strapped VfB could save itself an additional salary item – a new sports director would probably earn seven figures. And in terms of sport, things are going well with the current leadership after two wins from the first three Bundesliga games.
