Varese Basketball Faces Vanoli Cremona in Lombardy Trophy Match

The Varese Basketball takes the field on the parquet of PalaFitness Of desire for the Lombardy Trophy against the Vanoli Cremona. A match that is worth more than a simple friendly because, two weeks after the preliminary round of Basketball Champions League and the beginning of championship puts the red and whites face to face with a direct competitor for salvation, OJM’s first objective of the season.

Lacey unlocks Cremona but Cauley-Stein responds immediately by nailing the score to make it 38-33 in the 13th minute. Zanotti finds a good position and Varese responds with Hanlan’s central penetration, finding Denegri’s foul which sends him to the line. 2/2 for the red and white captain with Varese remaining close at 40-35, Cremona however takes advantage of the greater weight in the paint with Adrian finding Moretti’s foul and making it 2/2 from the line for 42-35 in the 14th minute. Librizzi hits from the arc and Varese gets within 4 at 42-38. Adrian again takes advantage of the favorable miss match in the area, this time with Librizzi, for the new +6 Vanoli suk 44-38. Hanlan still on the line makes it 2/2 and keeps his team at -4 at 44-40, Vanoli responds with Zanotti for 46-40 in the 15th minute. Two more points for Hanlan then on the pitch reversal McCullogh in a clash with Brown gets the worst of it and is forced to come off with a sprained left ankle. Denegri goes 1/2 from the line but Woldetensae hits from the arc and brings Varese within 2 at 47-45. Virginio hits a three-pointer for the red and white’s first lead at 47-48 in the 17th minute. Gordon brings his team back ahead with a three-point play against Assui, Woldetensae makes 1/2 from the line and in the 18th minute Vanoli leads 50-49. Errors on both sides, Cauly-Stein then takes care of assists from Shahid to nail the 50-51 Varese score in the 19th minute. Hanlan finds the triple in transition to make it 50-54, Varesino’s maximum advantage so far which is extended by McDermott’s triple which puts OJM ahead 50-57 at halftime.

First quarter

Varese on the pitch with the quintet of Moretti, Hanlan, McDermott, Brown and Cauley-Stein. First two points for the red and whites with a good play by McDermott, McCullogh responds immediately from the line. Golden in the paint first and Pecchia from the line then launch Cremona at 6-2 but Brown is good with a central penetration and finds the back of the net for the 6-4 in the 2nd minute. Adrian on one side and Brown on the other hit in transition then Denegri doesn’t miss the stop and shoots and in the 3rd minute the score says 10-7 Cremona. Series of triples on one side with McCullogh and Adrian on one side and Brown on the other for Vanoli’s 16-10 lead, but Cremona easily finds the way to the basket with Adrian who brings his lead to 18-10 in the 5th minute. Hanlan makes it 1/2 from the line, while McDermott raises a nice alley-oop for Cauley-Stein who makes it 18-13 in the 6th minute. Eboua hits in the paint but Hanlan does well to lead a quick transition for 20-15 on which Cavina calls a timeout. Cremona continues to find the way to the basket in the paint with Adrian dominating against McDermott and bringing him to +7 at 22-15, Shahid makes 2/2 from the line and keeps Varese in touch at 22-17 in the 7th minute. Lacey beats Shahid in penetration, Virginio hits from the arc, 24-20 in the 8th minute. Lacey hits a three-pointer, Shahid still infallible from the line, 28-22. Lacey continues to be a puzzle for Shahid who struggles to mark the penetrations of the 13 in Vanoli’s shirt who finds two more free throws which he scores for 30-22 Cremona in the 9th minute. Shahid loses the ball under Vanoli’s pressure and Eboua flies to the rim for 32-22 Vanoli, then another transition by Cremona with Zanotti who finds an easy support for 34-22 with 25 seconds left in the quarter which forces Bialaszewski to time out. Varese doesn’t take advantage of possession and Eboua nails another dunk for 36-22 at the end of the first quarter.
