The Tennis World Awaits the Return of Nick Kyrgios

We haven’t seen Nick Kyrgios on the tennis courts since the Stuttgart ATP in June and the circuit misses him, or that’s what Darren Cahill feels. Jannik Sinner’s coach is clear that the Australian must return to competition and hopes he does so soon. In addition, he compared him to the young American, Ben Shelton, who he says will be Top 10.

Darren Cahill he was chatting on the podcast Advantage Connors of Jimmy Connors on several topics, among which his reflection on Nick Kyrgios. And for the former world number 22, the fact that the Australian continues off the courts is not positive for tennis. It is well known to everyone that the personality and spectacle that Kyrgios provides is unique, in addition to the fact that his level of play is comparable to that of any player in the top 10.

According to the former Australian player, sometimes Kyrgios could give the image of not giving enough importance to tennis, but nothing to do with reality: “You feel like he doesn’t care. In fact, it seems that he cares too much because he ends up exploiting his box during the course of the match because he really wants to win and receives that support from his coach’s box.

“We need him back. The game is bigger than any player, of course, but he is certainly a loss to the sport right now and if he is playing well and feeling good physically, he brings a lot to every tournament he plays. So I only wish him the best. I hope he recovers and we hope to see him back very soon,” he added.

Shelton and Kyrgios, you love them or hate them

“Ben is like Kyrgios. You like Kyrgios, you hate him, I don’t care. On tour he brings something different and people come out, buy a ticket and watch these guys play. And Ben brings a real joy to what he does on the court, he’s not afraid, he doesn’t care who he plays against. I like it and I think the fact that Djokovic teased him a little by imitating his celebration was incredible. “You can’t have robots on tour, you can’t not have personalities on tour.”

Shelton will be a Top 10 player

“Shelton is incredibly brave in the big moments. At the US Open he was playing for the crowd and enjoying it. But again you have to put those results in week after week to be a factor in the top 10.

“I think Ben is very young, maybe he is not used to it, maybe too many expectations fell on his shoulders after the Australian Open. We will now see Ben consistently improve each week. I’m not saying he’s going to compete in the top 5, but I think he will eventually be a Top 10 player.”
