Champions League: Schlager leads Leipzig to their opening victory

Champions League

RB Leipzig won its opening game in the Champions League at Young Boys Bern 3-1 (1-1) on Tuesday and got off to a perfect start. With his first goal in the premier class, ÖFB team player Xaver Schlager led the Germans to an important victory in the first game. AC Milan missed that with a 0-0 draw against CL returnees Newcastle.

In his eighth game in the competition, Schlager took a shot from around 20 meters in the 73rd minute and hit the right corner – YB goalie Anthony Racioppi stretched in vain. In the finish, former Salzburg player Benjamin Sesko made it 3-1 (93′). In Group G, Leipzig will also face defending champions Manchester City and Red Star Belgrade.

Mohamed Simakan (3rd) gave the guests the lead early in the game. But in front of 31,500 spectators in the sold-out Wankdorf Stadium, Bern equalized through Meschack Elia (33′). In doing so, he punished the guests’ increasing passivity. The fact that Schlager only needed his second goal in Leipzig’s 39th competitive game was also due to the Albanian referee team, who denied Xavi Simmons a penalty. But after a corner, Schlager, lurking in the backcourt, struck with a touchdown into the right corner.

Last season’s semi-finalists Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 at the start of the premier class. On the first matchday it was a disappointment, especially for the hosts at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. The host dominated the game after losing 5-1 in the city derby against Inter Milan. Milan were the better team and had some very good chances, but couldn’t take advantage of them. Newcastle defended with difficulty and hardly managed to counterattack themselves.
