Sarina Wiegman is Europe’s Coach of the Year. She received great applause at the UEFA gala above all because of a clear statement.
Monaco – The groups for the new Champions League season have been determined. The German teams have been drawn attractive opponents. FC Bayern Munich meet Manchester United, Copenhagen and Galatasaray, while Borussia Dortmund have caught the hammer group with Paris, AC Milan and Newcastle. The emotional highlight of the evening was provided by Europe’s newly crowned trainer of the year: Sarina Wiegman.

Sarina Wiegman dedicates her award to the Spanish national team
The Dutchwoman, who coaches the England women’s national soccer team, said immediately after being honored: “We all know the problems surrounding the Spanish team. That really hurts me – as a coach, as a mother of two daughters, as a wife, as a person. This shows that there is still a very long way to go in women’s football and in society. It is a long way.”
She dedicated her award to the Spanish team against whom she and her team lost in the World Cup final. “This team deserves to be celebrated and heard.” She then put her award on the floor and applauded.

A real goosebump moment in Monaco – like for example Sky-Moderator Kai Dittmann found. He wasn’t the only one to praise this “great action”. There was a lot of encouragement for Wiegman, especially on social networks.
Afterwards, Europe’s new footballer of the year, Aitana Bonmatí, also found clear words. With equally haunting and emotional statements, she appealed to football officials to set an example for the children. As the Spanish world champion, she is of course aware of the fuss that the kiss scandal caused.

After Wiegman action: Other honors are almost lost
After the forced kiss for the player Jenni Hermoso at the World Cup award ceremony, Rubiales has been suspended from all football offices, but refuses to resign. With the strong words against sexual assault, the other awards of the evening were almost lost: Pep Guardiola was named coach of the year, his Manchester City protégé Erling Haaland was delighted with the award for Europe’s footballer of the year.
Miroslav Klose also received the UEFA President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. Before him, this honor was bestowed only on two other Germans. (acl/dpa)
