Remembering Michel Verschueren: A Legendary Figure at RSC Anderlecht

Michel Verschueren died exactly a year ago. He was 91 years old and continued to closely follow RSC Anderlecht until the end.

Michel Verschueren was a legend at RSC Anderlecht. Football was and remained his everything, even long after he had officially left the club.

“If Anderlecht had lost, he would not have been happy. Even when he had long since retired as sporting manager, he still followed everything,” son Michael Verschueren told Het Nieuwsblad.

Verschueren clearly had a mission at the club. “His big dream was of course that the constellation of Marc Coucke as owner and me as sporting director would yield optimal results. He hoped for a new tandem for the future as he had formed with Constant Vanden Stock.”

And he didn’t leave Michael alone. “Even then he regularly called me with advice: Son this, son that. I would do that differently. For example, he was opposed to the player-manager position that we gave to Vincent Kompany, but okay…”

Although all that didn’t last in the Lotto Park. “We could have worked things out better, but we were still happy that we guided Kompany to Anderlecht. Unfortunately, the Coucke-Verschueren constellation did not last.”
