Remco Evenepoel’s homework between Vuelta and Tour: “You have to understand the relativity of certain races” | Vuelta

Team boss Patrick Lefevere confirmed again in front of our microphone on Friday: without any calamities, Remco Evenepoel will appear at the start of his first Tour de France next year on June 29 in Florence.

The patron of Soudal – Quick Step would also understand if his teammate pressed the pause button after tonight, but Evenepoel still has his sights set on the Tour of Lombardy on October 7.

“I would also continue until Lombardy,” José De Cauwer said yesterday in our TV broadcast about a possible early end to the season for Evenepoel, who said he already had the Tour in mind in this Vuelta.

“Some things can still be tinkered with in the coming months, but to start doing that now? If you throw off the belt now, it will still be a long way towards the Tour.”

Our co-commentator sees an important agenda item on that route to Florence. “As a rider you have to learn to deal with the importance of a race. It is as if you can only race if you are 100 percent in order.”

“Is there even a hair wrong, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to race?” You have to avoid that. You have to be able to see the relativity of a race. Yes, perhaps everything can be better, but where does it stop?”

“You also have to learn to be satisfied with yourself, your preparation and the circumstances. They cannot always be 100 percent. At the start, everyone thinks that this or that could have been better;”

“Above all, you must find peace within yourself. And you must also take that peace with you to those around you, not nervousness.”

“Evenepoel was well prepared for this Vuelta. They should not stop there now.”

“They thought this was the best preparation. To panic afterwards, that’s a different story. They can probably learn lessons from this, but Lombardy certainly doesn’t stand in the way of that.”
