RASTA Vechta’s Young RASTA DRAGONS Celebrate Championship Victory and Youth Development Program Success

Tuesday, May 14, 2024

Head coach Harm-Ubbo Horst stayed in the capital after the 89:54 derby victory in the final against Baskets Juniors Oldenburg. The 25-year-old, who came to RASTA Vechta as a FSJ member in the 2017-18 season, had his final exam for young coach training on Monday, an intensive program for the individual support and further training of talented full-time young coaches from the clubs of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga and the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga – and passed it.

Meanwhile, his team was welcomed in the old town hall of the city of Vechta – by Mayor Kristin Kater and Quakenbrück’s deputy mayor Gerd Meinecke. “Your success has once again made the names of our cities widely known,” said Kater. He praised the cooperation between the two clubs from Vechta and Quakenbrück that has existed since 2016, which is a success story.

“In addition to the purely sporting results and successes, it is particularly important in your clubs that everything is going on behind the scenes,” added Kater. “That’s why I would like to thank all the people who create the conditions for your top sporting performance in the first place – the coaching staff, the club leadership, the club management and the representatives in the association.”

Gerd Meinecke knew how to send congratulations from the USA. He had already contacted Isaiah Hartenstein (New York Knicks) and his father Florian. Ten years ago, two years before the founding of the YOUNG RASTA DRAGONS, father and son led the Quakenbrücker youth undefeated to the championship in the Youth Basketball Bundesliga (U16) – with former Vechtaer Philipp Herkenhoff on the team.

“Values are lived in Vechta and Quakenbrück. The players get that from day one. The YOUNG RASTA DRAGONS are a real flagship for basketball. Players are produced who, on the one hand, want to perform well on the pitch, but on the other hand, must not forget their school education. We all attach great importance to this. And of course make sure you stay on the carpet. There are optimal conditions here with many advantages compared to many big city clubs. “So maybe we don’t have to wait another ten years until there is another success,” said Meinecke hopefully.

However, this is not a priority in the YOUNG RASTA DRAGONS youth program. Just like for the RASTA Vechtas farm team, the goal for the U19 cooperation team is that all players and coaches do everything they can to ensure that these teenagers continue to get closer to a level that will enable them to play basketball professionally later on.

RASTA’s club boss Stefan Niemeyer therefore addressed the U19s with wise and praising words: “When I was at the semi-final against Munich on Saturday, a former BBL professional spoke to me and said: ‘Do you know what the difference is between the teams today? The YOUNG RASTA DRAGONS play as a team!’ That’s exactly how it was, you played with and for each other. Throughout the season, whether you were in the matchday squad or not, you were a team. You are a homogeneous group in which there is no one who thinks they are something better. I ask and hope that you maintain your good character. Don’t be arrogant just because you are blessed with talent. Such successes and more can only be achieved if you put in the hard work – just like your coaches do. Maintain this zeal. And if one or the other leaves us, always think back to this season and your camaraderie, remember us positively.”
