Misko Raznatovic: The Power and Controversy of Europe’s Most Influential Player Representative

Misko Raznatovic (57 years old), founder of the BeoBasket agency, is undoubtedly the most powerful player representative in Europe. So, therefore, he is also one of the most powerful in the world. A full-fledged ‘super agent’ through whom many of the most important operations in the market go through every summer, his career is not free of messes and problems, some simply related to his professional performance. The last one he is involved in is with Partizan from his native Serbia.

The conflict comes from the departure from Partizan of Yam Madar, the 22-year-old guard whom Raznatovic represents and who has left the Belgrade team to go to Fenerbahçe. But the tension extends to 2010 and Vassilis Spanoulis’s change of shirt in Athens. The legendary shooting guard jumped from Panathinaikos (coached by Obradovic) to Olympiacos.

Now, Partizan has assured that it is breaking ties with Raznatovic and his agency and that it does not want operations in which BeoBasket is involved. A veto to which Raznatovic himself responded in an interview for the Greek press: “This business is like that. I’m going to give you an example because you (referring to the journalist) are from Athens and you know this city. When Spanoulis left for Olympiacos they told me ‘ok, the Hilton is the frontier for you now. Don’t go north.’ And I didn’t go for five years, they told me that ultras knew me and that it would be dangerous. Other agents don’t understand it. In Serbia, if you bring a player from outside and he does badly, everyone says he is bad. If it’s from my agency, they say that Misko sent them a bad player, which is my fault. I guess it’s also part of my success, so it’s not a problem either. Let everything stay like this.”

Regarding the Madar case, his departure to Fenerbahçe, a possible legal conflict and the veto of his agency, Raznatovic has also spoken clearly: “Whatever he says, it will do more harm than anything else. It has all been due to the mistakes of his managers, especially Mr. Zoran Savic (the general manager). The president of Partizan, with whom I have a good relationship, gave an interview in which the only truth he stated was my name. The rest was all wrong because they had been misinformed. I don’t particularly care about that, but what leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that Partizan already existed before these managers who are there now arrived. All the agents in the world together have not done 10% of what I have done for that team.”

And he gave concrete examples: “Nikola Pekovic wanted to go to Hemofarm but he went there. They took Lauvergne, Westermann… they had never heard of those players and I took them there. There was a time when those who hated me were the Red Star fans, they thought I gave more importance to the Partizan fans. But he did it because it was best for the players. They were coached by Vujosevic, the players were progressing, it was a Euroleague team… Even if what about Madar was true, and it is not, they should not get like that because of everything I have done for them in the past. A couple of years ago, when the new president and his management team arrived, they were in a horrible situation. They had money, but they couldn’t get players. I worked hard, and in the middle of the season I took Renfroe, Jaramaz, Jankovic, Zagorac… four players with contracts in the ACB. But I managed to get them to free themselves and go to Partizan to start a new era. “They have very little memory.”
