Mexico is the second largest emitter of pollutants in Latin America: CAF – El Sol de México

The Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean-CAF indicated this Friday that Mexico is the second country with the highest emissions of pollutants in the region, representing 17 percent of the total.

Even so, its level of emissions per inhabitant is below the world and regional average, said in a statement the CAF, whose executive president, Sergio Díaz-Granados, visited Mexico to present the Economy and Development Report (RED) “Global Challenges , regional solutions: Latin America and the Caribbean facing the climate and biodiversity crisis.

“Mexico has great challenges, but also opportunities that require coordinated work between the public and private sectors and civil society,” said Díaz-Granados, according to the bulletin.

The study shows that in Mexico “the main emissions differ from the rest of Latin America.”

The greatest pollutants, he detailed, come from the industrial sector (31%), energy systems (25%) and transportation (17%), followed by the agricultural sector (13%), changes in land use (12 %) and buildings (3%).

The research found that in Mexico extreme climate-related phenomena increased in the last two decades from 3.5 to 5.8 events per year, on average.

These events affected more than 557 thousand people, with storms and floods having the highest incidence.

Temperatures will continue to increase in Mexico

The report also “presents scenarios that predict that the average temperature in Mexico will continue to increase in the coming decades,” and “contemplates a reduction in rainfall that will become less predictable, with a negative impact on the agricultural sector.”

In this sense, the CAF warned that agriculture in Mexico “is particularly exposed to the climate crisis”, since 44% of the crop area in the country is made up of farms of less than two hectares and 76% of less than 10.

Furthermore, about 73% of the crop is rainfed or seasonal, that is, it depends exclusively on rain.

On the other hand, the development bank highlighted that Mexico is one of the countries with the greatest biological diversity in the world and is considered one of the 17 megadiverse territories.

He also highlighted that the country updated its “Nationally Determined Contribution” in 2022, in which it proposes an emissions goal for 2030 that would imply a reduction of 5.5% compared to 2015.

“The plan that Mexico has presented to modernize 40% of its hydroelectric plants and an electric mobility strategy is very positive; likewise, we also highlight that it is the first country in the region to implement an emissions trading system. for large industries,” said Pablo Brassiolo, principal economist and co-author of the CAF RED.
