Marcelo Bielsa Leaves Out Cavani and Suarez for Uruguay’s World Cup Qualifiers

Uruguay’s Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa has chosen to do without Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez for Celeste’s next two matches in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The two 36-year-old strikers are the best scorers in the history of the Uruguayan selection, with respectively 68 and 58 goals scored (in 136 and 132 caps). They now play at Boca Juniors in Argentina, for the former Parisian, and in Brazil at Gremio Porto Alegre, for the former Barcelonan.

Two other Uruguayan veterans are absent from this list, Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, 37, injured, and Sporting defender Sebastian Coates, 32, not retained. Uruguay will host Chile on Friday in Montevideo before going to challenge Ecuador in Quito on September 12 in the playoffs for the Amsud zone.
