Threshold. The German national baseball team is in the quarterfinals of the European Championships in the Czech Republic. National coach Jendrick Speer’s team finished their preliminary group undefeated with a 15-5 win against Switzerland on Tuesday evening and can even dream of the semi-finals before the knockout round on Thursday (12 p.m.) against France.

With an impressive 2-0 win against Israel in a nail-biter late on Monday evening, the selection of the German Baseball and Softball Association had opened the door to the round of the top eight. Above all, the hard-fought triumph against Israel’s star ensemble, which was full of ex-MLB professionals, made the baseball scene sit up and take notice. First and foremost, excellent pitching from starter Dalton Duke von Schamann and the two substitute pitchers Markus Solbach and Sven Schüller pulled the reigning European runner-up champions in their tracks. Solbach celebrated an impressive comeback after serious elbow surgery, which will likely end his professional career in the USA.

With three strikeouts – including against the two former major leaguers Ty Kelly and Ryan Lavarnway – the Rhinelander sent a strong signal to his teammates. The former Regensburg Schüller finally brought home the victory after two innings full of tremors. On the offensive, Germany took advantage of the few opportunities that presented themselves. Eric Brenk from Bonn and Alex Schmidt from Regensburg scored the two points and thus ensured the men’s national team’s greatest success in recent memory.
