After a superb season last year, the Gaillards du Cégep de Jonquière D1 women’s volleyball team aspires to have another very good campaign this year.
With several players returning this season, and the addition of some new recruits, the team’s head coach, Daniel Dawson, believes his club could once again compete with the best teams in the league.
“We have a good core of returning players, and to them, we add good recruits. I think we should still have a very good team and that we should fight for the top positions. And possibly even fight for the championship,” he says.
Remember that last year, the Gaillards had a phenomenal season, winning 10 of their 11 regular season games. The only defeat having occurred during the very last part of the season.
In addition, Daniel Dawson’s team was ranked in the top 5 of the best teams in Canada.
And finally, during the end-of-season provincial championship, the Gaillards finished in 2nd place, winning the silver medal.
“We’re not putting pressure on ourselves with that this season. I am confident in our group and the objective will be to put the players in comfortable positions in order to perform well. We no longer have a desire to do things well and I believe that this is what will allow us to continue to be successful. »
To the test
Daniel Dawson completed his team’s training during the college back-to-school week.
For the last three weeks, the club has trained in the gymnasium and this week begins its first preparatory matches.
And to prepare well for the season, the Gaillards will face the best teams in Quebec in preseason.
“We will quickly find opposition by facing the best college and university teams. We want to make sure we play high-level volleyball to prepare well. »
So far, the head coach likes what he sees from his team.
“We have a group that is very committed to preparation, we have a very physical team with good depth in all positions. This year we will have a very complete club. »
The Gaillards will begin their season with an opening match at Cégep de Jonquière on October 1st.
