The Rise of the New Generation on the ATP Circuit: Comparing Sinner and Alcaraz to Zverev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, and Medvedev

The new generation seems to be gradually taking over the ATP circuit. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz already have three Grand Slams between them.

They are doing better than the generation of Zverev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, Medvedev to whom a brilliant future was promised. However, Alexander Zverev judges that this lack of Grand Slam success should not be put to their discredit.

In an interview given to Tennis ChannelAlexander Zverev recalls that his generation had to battle with the entire “big 3” at the start of their career.

“I think everyone will be there in Paris. I have just returned from three consecutive semi‐finals at Roland‐Garros, including one which ended in hospital (in 2022 when he was seriously injured against Nadal, editor’s note). It’s obviously an important tournament for my calendar and I want to give myself the best chance of winning it. Our generation, me, Daniil, Stefanos…: we are all great players. The biggest difference between us and the younger generation is that we had to play against Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in our first years on the tour, a difficult challenge in tennis. But we still managed to beat them. Medvedev beat Novak in the final of a Grand Slam, I beat him in the semi‐final of the Olympic Games and I played great matches against Rafa. »
