Flick fired after home debacle – who will be the new national coach now?
The DFB is parting ways with Hansi Flick after the embarrassment against Japan. For the next international match against France, sports director Rudi Völler, Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner will oversee the selection on an interim basis. There are different speculations about Flick’s successor.

Sammer, who became German champion as a coach with Borussia Dortmund in 2002, had already worked as sports director at the DFB from 2006 to 2012. Until now, the 56-year-old, who currently works as a personal advisor to BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke and in the DFB task force, had always emphasized that he did not see his future in coaching.
“But he’s close enough to football. If you were to return to day-to-day coaching, it would probably be more difficult,” explained Matthäus. However, there are other priorities in the national coaching job that would suit Sammer.
Ideal solution Rudi Völler
An ideal solution for Matthäus until the European Championship would be Rudi Völler, who will coach the team in the friendly against France on Tuesday. Jürgen Klopp could then take over from Völler, although he is unlikely to be available before the European Championships. In addition to Völler, Julian Nagelsmann, Matthias Sammer, Stefan Kuntz, Oliver Glasner and even Jürgen Klopp, who is contractually bound to Liverpool FC, are being treated in the media as Flick’s successors.
