Elfrid Payton’s Quest for an NBA Comeback: Training with Timberwolves and Hornets

Elfrid Payton continues working to try to return to the NBA. According to Michael Scotto, a journalist from Hoopshypethe point guard has held training sessions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Charlotte Hornets, who have had the opportunity to test his fitness and abilities in order to consider a possible incorporation.

Payton has not played a game in the league since 2022, in which he became a very closet man in the Suns to the point of being left without a contract last year. Although during his time in Orlando and New Orleans he proved to be a complete point guard capable of having brilliant nights in very different areas, at 29 years old he is already having problems finding a place in the NBA, and in fact during the 22nd season. 23 had to head to Puerto Rico due to a lack of opportunities in the league.

Not counting his last year in Phoenix, Elfrid averaged 10.9 points, 6.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game during his time in the NBA, and even had a not inconsiderable 17 triple-doubles. There still seem to be teams with enough interest to schedule private trials with him, but if he doesn’t take advantage of the opportunities that arise this year, his window to return to the league will increasingly close until it becomes truly difficult for him to return.
