Despite the Russian war of aggression, Ukraine will take part in the Summer Olympics in Paris. This was confirmed by Sports Minister Matviy Bidny. He said that his country had already won one victory: Russia had been suspended from the Olympic movement.
The President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine, Vadym Hutzait, called the trip to the Summer Games in Paris an important message. “It is already a victory that we can take part under the conditions of the invasion,” he said. In Ukraine the preparation is taking place “under rockets, under bombs”. However, most Ukrainian athletes trained abroad.
Because of the war that has been going on for more than two years, athletes from Russia and Belarus are only allowed to take part in Paris as neutral athletes without a flag or anthem. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the professional associations should also ensure that no athletes arrive who have identified themselves as supporters of the war. For such decisions, Ukraine has provided dossiers on Russian or Belarusian athletes.
No joint photos with Russian athletes
So far there has been no final confirmation of Ukraine’s participation. However, the NOK had already recommended that its athletes avoid meeting and taking photos with Russian athletes in Paris if possible.
The Summer Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26th to August 11th. This is the third time the French capital has hosted the Summer Games and France is the host country for the sixth time.
