The national athlete began by explaining why she left Para basketball to dedicate herself fully to Para badminton. “I feel that I have the feeling that there is something pending, which is to obtain an achievement for Chile, to hang a medal around my neck and that my parents see that, but it is very difficult for me to achieve it in basketball, being super realistic, in Chile we are very far from the other countries at the Pan-American level”, he acknowledged.

Regarding the discipline that he now performs, he mentioned that “The possibility of learning about Para badminton arose, for a while they had been talking to me about this sport and I was acting crazy. In the end I wanted to try, I started to get to know it and I have been falling in love little by little, I still don’t have the same love for it as I do for basketball, but it is happening very naturally.”

The difficult situation that Daniela Zapata faces facing Santiago 2023

Regarding her participation in the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, Daniela acknowledged that it will not be easy to win medals. “I have been playing badminton for a year and two months and I have positioned myself among the 7 best in America, I feel calm with what I am doing so far. Qualifying for Santiago 2023 was a great achievement, although I am clear that I will probably not reach the podium, it is very difficult. The world champion is in Peru. “I really want to get a bronze perhaps,” he assured.

Along the same lines, he addressed a delicate family issue that occupies his entire focus, in parallel with what Santiago 2023 will be. “I was training fully this year, preparing for the goal of reaching the podium, but unfortunately sometimes things happen in the way. In August, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, so today I am very focused on her rehabilitation. She has to have surgery in October. My number of training sessions decreased, because the most important thing is family,” he commented.

“I am going to Santiago 2023 without any major demands. I already have a very big personal demand. “We have to recover as a family and be at our best with my mother, so that things go well and hopefully tomorrow we will both wear the medal,” the national team concluded.
