Cycling: Dagnoni, ‘we can do even better on safety’ – Cycling

The series of accidents involving cyclists in Milan continues. The third within a few days has reignited the debate on the extreme drama of road safety. “In a dialogue that has always remained open with the institutions, we have long put forward our proposals which are the result of the work and experience of athletes, technicians and all those involved in cycling – says the president of the Federciclismo, Cordiano Dagnoni -, but the recently launched highway code has little implemented our suggestions. The institutions have proven to be sensitive to the issue, but for reasons unknown to us the situation has not made great progress”.

“The accidents that continue to occur also have consequences on the development of the Italian cycling movement – added Dagnoni -. The risk of tragedies or injuries decreases practice at a youth level, which does not happen, for example, on the track or in mountain biking, places in fact safer and therefore preferred by parents who introduce their children to this sport. For this reason, we must also work on the aspect linked to the lack of facilities”.

An invitation to institutions to continue the awareness-raising conversation: on the road, on the track and off-road. The demonstration of the desire for cycling was also seen in the recently concluded youth events: the Regions Trophy on the track at the Bottecchia Velodrome in Pordenone and the Italian Youth MTB Team Relay Championships at Ciocco, in Tuscany. “I saw a playful, playful spirit, this is what the Federation tries to support. As beginners or students you have to think of cycling as fun, you become real athletes at an older age. The Regional Committees and their technicians immediately grasped the federal intent and they are working excellently, but we need to improve road safety so that we can train with young people in the same way on the track as on the road.”
