Coach Bo Svensson Focused on Performance, Not Contract Extension, with FSV Mainz 05

Coach Bo Svensson is not yet worried about a possible extension of his expiring contract with the Bundesliga soccer club FSV Mainz 05. “In the current situation, that doesn’t matter at all,” said the Dane, whose contract with the Rheinhessen runs until the summer of 2024, on Thursday: “Focusing on what’s in the future is really very far from my way of thinking.”

First of all, he wanted to “ensure that we manage to deliver consistent performance again,” said Svensson: “That’s my entire focus, believe me or not.” After three Bundesliga games this season, the 05ers are still waiting for a win, with one point and nine goals conceded they are in second-to-last place in the table.

In the league game against VfB Stuttgart, which started well, on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky), Mainz’s focus should be on defense. “That’s the basis. We have to say that we were too inconsistent,” explained Svensson. Stuttgart is currently playing “impressively well,” the 44-year-old added: “We are not so naïve that we say we don’t look at Stuttgart at all. But we have a lot to do with looking at ourselves at the moment.”
