The Italian rider Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) won pole position this Saturday in the MotoGP category of the Catalunya Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the Motorcycle World Championship calendar, ahead of the Spanish Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia).
The current world champion once again showed the power of the ‘Desmosedici’, which were surpassed on Friday by the Aprilia of Espargaró and Maverick Viñales, and dominated his sixth qualifying of the season, although by a very fair margin over the one from Granollers, who was unable to repeat last year’s pole position at home.
The championship leader set a best lap of 1:38.639, a new record on the Catalan circuit, improving the 1:38.686 that Aleix Espargaró had signed in ‘Practice’, to keep the best time. The Catalan pressed in his last attempt, but finished one tenth behind ‘Pecco’ and will start in second place.
Aprilia showed its strength this weekend with the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira, completing the front row five thousandths behind the Spaniard and after going through ‘Q1’, and ahead of the other official rider, Maverick Viñales, also just over one tenth of Bagnaia.
Saturday morning brought better news than the day before for Honda. The brand with the golden wing had taken the last four places in ‘Practice’, but once again found help in the eight-time world champion Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda).
The Cervera rider once again squeezed the most out of his mount and managed to get the second ticket in ‘Q1’ to be in ‘Q2’, and although he finished twelfth there with a time of 1:39.701, his performance was significantly better, despite the fact that he is still a second off the lead.
