USA Basketball (abbreviated as USAB), Chinese report is the United States Basketball Association[1][2][3], is the governing body of basketball in the United States and is recognized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and competition of the U.S. national team. It is also responsible for promoting youth basketball development, coaching training and supervising sports safety.[4]

The organization was founded in 1974 and was originally named the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA). In 1978, then-U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed the “Amateur Sports Act”, establishing the United States Olympic Committee and stipulating the national governing body for each sport. Among them, the United States Amateur Basketball Association became the management of the basketball project mechanism. In 1989, as the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) allowed professional players to participate, the organization also changed its name to USA Basketball (reported in Chinese as “American Basketball Association”).[5][6]

The organization uses a five-level membership system to admit other basketball organizations. The five levels are Professional, Collegiate, Scholastic, Youth and Associate. For example, the NBA is a professional-level member, the NCAA is a college-level member, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is an association-level member.[5]The organization does not have any operational command authority over its member organizations.[7]
