Analysis of the Disappointing Draws by Top Belgian Football Clubs

In his weekly football analysis, Peter Vandenbempt takes a look at the three draws of the top clubs. Antwerp, Genk, Anderlecht and Club Brugge played a draw on the 8th matchday. “Despite a lot of potential on the field, we saw a bad match,” he says about the top match in Anderlecht.

Riemer’s rose-colored glasses

After the draw in the top match between Anderlecht and Club Brugge, everyone was disappointed with the level of the match. Except Brian Riemer.

Perhaps the Anderlecht coach was even more euphoric after his unexpected contract extension and his glasses were even rosier than usual. “One of the best halves since he arrived,” said Riemer. His team had delivered 45 minutes of dominant football.

I don’t take that seriously anymore. It is also detrimental to his credibility. Just like the images of his boss Jesper Fredberg, who is communicating all the time from the stands.

Despite a lot of potential on the pitch, we saw a bad match. We saw hardly any chances, little quality on the ball or any kind of excitement in the two rectangles.

Anderlecht and Club Brugge played a non-match.

Peter Vandenbempt

It is true that Anderlecht started full of energy, but they did not create any chances. Not even a long shot or an attack with a real idea behind it.

The failure of Dolberg and Delaney in a few minutes was a serious loss for Anderlecht. Riemer is right about that.

The conclusion is that men with experience and quality have to bring more. Such as Mats Rits, but certainly also Thorgan Hazard. It turns out he isn’t ready to start a match yet.

I wonder when Anderlecht’s potential will pay off, when football will be played more smoothly, when opportunities and goals will come. This will be necessary to remain at the top.

After three draws, a 6 out of 6 against Eupen and KV Mechelen is a must. And preferably with some conviction.

Thin rinse at Club Brugge

Club Brugge could only win one of its last five matches. That is not yet a problem. The team is in the leading group and has already performed excellently in several matches: with good football, with many chances and many goals.

In Bruges they have the best core in the country. Once at cruising speed, Club will be the best again, but they must remain alert.

The abundance of talent and class up front and in midfield is in stark contrast to the thin pool at the back. Club Brugge has not been able to keep a score of 0 for eight games in a row. Worrying, because it is not always compensated with goals.

That is why I think the catch-up match against Genk this week is an important match. It will be a moment when Club Brugge has to make a statement to show that you are perhaps the best after all.

A spectacle in Limburg

In Limburg, football fans had reason to cheer. KRC Genk and STVV delivered a spectacle and yet the two teams seemed unhappy.

I thought that was extra nice. It was bad that Genk and STVV received the same points after a great match as Club Brugge and Anderlecht after their non-match.

Big tribute to STVV coach Fink. His team played football at Genk and was rewarded with a 0-3 lead.

A congratulations also to Genk, which showed resilience after the break after a grueling match against Fiorentina.

The same applies to Genk as to Club Brugge. It has already received a lot of praise for its football and positive approach, but it has only won once in 5 games.

Or 2 times out of 8 matches. Or even 4 times out of 14.

You’re going to get applause at the end of the season, but you don’t win prizes that way.

Poor Antwerp

Antwerp has not had the happiest week. After the 5-0 in Barcelona it remained 0-0 against RWDM.

The draw was harder than the blow in the Champions League. Rightly so, but I was surprised by what chairman Paul Gheysens said after Barcelona. The focus had to be on football again, he didn’t think the team’s low block was right…

Very strange. A 0-0 against Molenbeek will certainly not have boosted his mood.

Also striking: the once again very positive evaluation from Mark van Bommel. His team should have won, but the coach talked about his team’s patience. While I thought Antwerp was very poor with the ball for an hour.

Antwerp played without ideas, the team did not set the pace and lost a lot of ball. Just like in Westerlo, I thought it was a poor match for the champion.

3 wins in 7 matches is not enough for Antwerp. On Wednesday it will be time to show it again against leader KAA Gent.

Antwerp striker Vincent Janssen missed two penalties.
