THE FOLDER GREATER. Save money with an empty bottle and how low are the prices of Delhaize’s new Little Lions?

There’s the M&M’s trap at Albert Heijn again. The bags of 200 and 250 grams are in promo this week. You buy two for the price of 4.89 euros. In itself that is already a discount that is hardly worth the effort because not even ten percent with the brown and yellow bags, but you don’t even do a business at all when you buy these. If you look at the unit price, you still pay 9.78 euros per kg with this promo. If you buy a yellow bag of 400 grams at Albert Heijn – there is no promo on it – you pay 7.48 euros per kg. That is almost 25 percent less. With the brown bags of 400 grams it is 9.23 euros per kg without a promo, which is also less. Or how you are more expensive with the M&M’s in promo. And it’s not the first time we’ve noticed it. Do you want to do some business? At Aldi, the M&Ms are also in promo from Saturday, where you pay 6.73 euros per kg when you buy a yellow bag of 400 grams. Colruyt will of course have to follow suit. Oh yes, there is also a promo at Carrefour: 2 plus 1 free. But there you still pay 7.87 euros per kg for the 550 g bags.

Another product popping up everywhere this week: Barilla pasta. The promotion is almost the same for everyone: buy four, get two free. Only Delhaize has a ‘3 + 3’ from Thursday, but are they therefore also the cheapest? We compare it with spaghetti no. 5. At Albert Heijn you still pay 2.39 euros per kg. At Carrefour that is even 2.65 euros and at Spar 2.52 euros. What about Delhaize? The best action on paper is also in real life: 1.85 euros per kg.

Little Lions

And now that we are at Delhaize. They want to get rid of their expensive image, so they expand their ‘Little Lions’ – house brands that they lower in price – from 500 to 1,000 products. But are they that cheap now? On their site they prominently present the following four as their latest Lions: hazelnut spread, ladyfingers, cornflakes and semi-skimmed milk. We do a random sample in other stores without specifically looking for the cheapest on the market. We also only look at the price of their house brand within that category, not at any quality differences.

For a jar of hazelnut spread of 750 grams you now pay 2.55 euros at Delhaize. We check at Aldi: 2.29 euros for the same amount. You pay 2.65 euros per kg for Delhaize cornflakes, and 1.78 euros for those from Albert Heijn. The boudoirs at Delhaize cost 3.73 euros per kg, at Carrefour that is 6.23 euros per kg. We finish with semi-skimmed milk in 1 liter PET bottles. At Delhaize you still pay 1.13 euros per litre, at Colruyt that is 1.09 euros. So one in four in our sample, that’s not much to change an image.

We conclude with a tip about how an empty bottle can get you a discount. At ICI PARIS XL, there is a promotion running until 3 September where you receive a 20 percent discount when you bring in an empty package of “perfume, care or make-up”. Whether it is made of glass, plastic or plastic, it does not matter. Only miniature bottles, deodorants and “packaging with harmful gases” are not welcome. More info can be found here.
