The FEF ratifies De la Fuente and rules out a motion of no confidence in Rubiales

Unlike Jorge Vilda, who may be dismissed as women’s coach next week, Luis de la Fuente has guaranteed his continuity at the head of La Roja, questioned after his controversial applause for Luis Rubiales during the assembly of the Spanish Football Federation (FEF) held last Friday. De la Fuente has been confirmed in his position “by all members of the FEF”, as announced on Thursday by the interim president of the federation, Pedro Rocha, who described the coach from La Rioja as “a worker who is doing wonderfully” in the absolute selection.

De la Fuente will reveal this Friday the call-up for Spain for the qualifying matches for Euro 2024 against Georgia and Cyprus after being put on the trigger for the ‘Rubiales case’. Luis Enrique’s replacement has already been officially endorsed by an institution that continues at the expense, like the provisionally suspended president, of the resolution of the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) that could lead to the disqualification of Rubiales, although it rejects a possible motion of censure against the Granada leader promoted by one of the presidents of the territorial ones.

The FEF rules out the possibility that a motion of censure can be presented to Rubiales, since it defends, like some jurists, that it cannot be carried out as the Royal Decree of Elections to Sports Federations prevents it. According to the new Sports Law, it is not possible to present a motion of censure during the first six months of the mandate, nor when there are between six months and a year remaining until the date of the election.

The president of the Catalan Football Federation (FCF), however, has urged the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to grant permission to the FEF to call elections now, but the Government, through the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles , demanded this Thursday patience and “let the TAD work calmly, so that it can assess the corresponding sanctions.”

The elections, in 2024

With the territorial ones clearly divided on a motion of no confidence against Rubiales totally ruled out by the FEF, the presidential elections could therefore not be held before 2024 and until March or April of next year there would not be a new president. Meanwhile, with Rubiales suspended for three months by FIFA and pending the TAD’s decision, Pedro Rocha, president of the Extremadura Federation, would continue in office as interim.

«What we have to do is work, work and work, because everything comes out of work. The institution is above all people. The image of Spanish football is very important, we are playing a lot with a World Cup (the one in 2030) and we hope there will be a consensus,” said Rocha, who calls himself “a man from the FEF.” «I have already experienced this in my territory and the only thing we have done is work as a team and get up. We have been against the wind and we have come out ahead, “the provisional substitute for Rubiales proudly proclaimed.

As confirmed by Rocha, now without Rubiales after the global scandal of his kiss without consent to Jenni Hermoso, the next institutional step of the federation will be an appointment with the world champion coach to address his dismissal. «We cannot say that Vilda is going to be a women’s coach or not. When we meet, we will have to listen and talk, which is the most important thing,” stressed the leader from Extremadura.
