During his match against Ben Shelton in it ATP Cincinnati 2023the Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas, number 4 of the ATP ranking, experienced a rather unusual distraction attempt. As he tried to serve, Tsitsipas was interrupted by a noise that imitated the sound of a bee, coming from the stands.
Initially, Tsitsipas thought there was an actual insect buzzing around him, prompting him to wave his racket. However, he soon realized that the sound was coming from a female spectator in the stands. The tennis player approached the chair umpire, Nacho Forcadell, to present his complaint, indicating that someone behind him was imitating a bee.
The incident caused some confusion on the court. Tsitsipas told his opponent, Shelton, that he had never experienced anything like it in his career. The European, with a mixture of anger, astonishment and even amusement, approached the public to identify the person responsible.
A man in the audience pointed to a blonde woman in a hat and glasses as the culprit. The woman finally admitted her mistake and apologized to Tsitsipas.
