Sardar Azmoun Makes Perfect Move from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to AS Roma

It had already been hinted at in the past few days, but now it’s official: Sardar Azmoun is leaving the Werkself after a good year and a half and will initially join AS Roma for a season. The striker successfully completed his medical check on Friday.

“It was Sardar’s wish to start again in a different environment,” said sporting director Simon Rolfes on the club’s website. “Unfortunately, he has struggled a lot with injuries over the past year and a half. Now we have reached a good agreement with Roma. In Serie A, Sardar can prove his class at the absolute top level.”

Leverkusen will receive a loan fee of around 1.5 million euros from Roma. Next summer, the Europa League finalist from the previous season can sign Azmoun for twelve million euros. The Werkself could even make a transfer profit with that, in January 2022 Bayer 04 paid 2.5 million euros to Zenit St. Petersburg for the Iranian.

Azmoun planned to replace injured Abraham

Due to his numerous injuries, the 28-year-old was never able to assert himself in Leverkusen. In the last Bundesliga season he made 23 appearances (four goals), but only eight times from the start (kicker average mark 3.89). The chances of playing time were also slim in 2023/24, at the latest after the signing of center forward Victor Boniface from Union Saint-Gilloise.

At the Serie A club, Azmoun is now set to replace Englishman Tammy Abraham, who tore his cruciate ligament in June, in José Mourinho’s team. Roma started the new season with a draw against US Salernitana (2-2).
