Reinforcement of Pantitlán is to withstand earthquakes: Jesús Esteva – El Sol de México

The reinforcement of the bridge of the Pantitlán terminal, of the Metro Line, where there are several separations from the structure, is safe and capable of withstanding earthquakes, assured the Secretary of Works and Services of Mexico City, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina.

In a conference, the capital official highlighted the prevention work that they have done in the structure that, in some areas, looks separate.

“All of this is designed and reviewed by structural experts who tell us that the structure is safe, it is not just safe, but it has redundancy, it is capable of resisting the seismic forces to which it would have to be subjected and significant displacements,” he assured.

Among the actions that the authorities have carried out at the Pantitlán station is the placement of bars that allow detecting if there are displacements of the beam on the support. If one is released, said Esteva Medina, the authorities must act.

He highlighted the propping of the girders of the Metro terminal, the periodic topographical survey of historical control of leveling, the foundation in uneven areas, the structural number revision of the bridge, among other works.

“These struts, there is one for each of the girders, in each of the two supports, that is, 22 tension strut systems were installed, they have the capacity to resist the entire structure.

“If this beam no longer had support, if it moved, this prop has the capacity to resist the weight of the structure and the weight of the trains at maximum capacity, that’s how it was analyzed,” he said.

On August 23, the head of the Institute for Construction Safety, Renato Berrón, reported in a conference that the subsidence in the area is due to the extraction of water and that the Pantitlán station sinks an average of 11 centimeters a year.

“The total subsidence that we have now, from when it was built to date, has been 80 centimeters, and thus in many parts of the city these subsidences are generally reflected,” he added.

The head of the STC Metro, Guillermo Calderón, reported that they will modernize Line 9, which runs from Pantitlán to Tacubaya, will start after the rehabilitation works on Line 1 are finished.

“When the intervention is made, for the leveling and correction of the road, we would have to suspend the service in this section, from Pantitlán to Velódromo,” he added. With information from Aabye Vargas
