Quebec Athletes Win Three Silver Medals in Judo at Francophone Games

Quebec offered three silver medals to Canada in judo on Friday at the Francophone Games in Kinshasa, thanks to Laurence Biron (-70 kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) and John Messe A Bessong fils (+100 kg).

First, Laurence Biron (-70 kg), aged 19, from Boucherville, 167th in the world ranking, lost in the final against Aina Laura Rasoanaivo Razafy from Madagascar, 69th in the world.

But she did not deserve it. Biron pushed his opponent into overtime (golden score), and it was a waza-ari that ended the fight after more than 7 minutes of effort.

Then, 22-year-old Caroline Godbout (-78 kg) from Stoneham, 65th in the world senior ranking, was surprised by the French Liz Laura Ngelebeya, 68th in the world.

At the 14th second of the fight, the Quebecer could not do anything against her opponent’s ippon.

Among the boys, 22-year-old Montrealer Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg), 75th in the IJF senior ranking, lost in the final against Alexandru Sibisan from Romania, 23rd in the junior ranking.

A waza-ari at 2:49 of regulation time was enough to decide between the two athletes.

Finally, the Lavallois John Messe A Bessong son (+100 kg), aged 18, is 8th in the world junior ranking, left the gold medal to Frenchman Khamzat Saparbaev after 23 seconds of combat.

An ippon relegated the Quebecer to the second step of the podium.

With Friday’s three silver medals, Canada is now 7th in total medals (4-6-3) or 9th in the gold medal table.
