The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (FBPUR) dispensed with forward Phillip Wheeler at the last minute to close the list of 12 players who will play the FIBA World Cup 2023 from August 26 in the Philippines.

The team led by Nelson Colón was made up of Tremont Waters, Jordan Howard, Stephen Thompson, John Holland, Isaiah Piñeiro, Christopher Ortiz, Justin Reyes, Ethan Thompson, Aleem Ford, George Conditt IV, Ismael Romero and Arnaldo Toro, reported the FBPUR in a statement.

“We had a healthy conversation with Phillip Wheeler and we explained to him that the doors of the National Team are open for him,” said the Puerto Rican coach.

“This decision was made because we understood that it was the best for the team facing the Basketball World Cup. We count on him for the future,” he said, added Colón.

The squad will be concentrated in Manila, headquarters of Group B, which is completed by the teams of South Sudan, Serbia and China.

Puerto Rico will debut this Saturday against South Sudan. On August 28 they will face Serbia and two days later they will close with China.
