It was said to be very emotional, according to visitors to the event that took place last Wednesday in the VfL Wolfsburg fan house. Marcel Schäfer, the former managing director, who was relieved of his duties on April 10th, had invited all employees of the club, for which he worked as a player, sports director and managing director for almost 17 years.

Almost everyone who could set it up came, around 250 guests, including fellow managing directors Michael Meeske and Dr. Tim Schumacher and sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz said goodbye to their ex-boss, who thanked them for their long collaboration. Remarkable: Every VfL employee received a gift. The emotional highlight is said to have been the standing ovation for the 39-year-old after his acceptance speech.

For Schäfer, this should be a conciliatory end to his work in Wolfsburg after he informed the supervisory board in April that he wanted to clear the way for a new start at VfL in the summer and that he had also received an inquiry from RB Leipzig. The manager was then immediately released. Since then, negotiations have been ongoing with the Saxons, which have so far led to a rapprochement but not yet an agreement. However, that should only be a matter of time.

This is how the negotiations between VfL and RB are going

Wolfsburg’s demand is said to have initially been more than four million euros, while Leipzig’s first offer is said to have been 500,000 euros – and was viewed internally by VfL as “training compensation” and rejected. According to kicker information, RB is playing into a detail that was agreed between VfL and Schäfer when he was released. The managing director’s contract originally ran until the end of January 2026, but now he would be free on January 1, 2025.

Of course, the league competitor does not want to wait that long for the new candidate, so a financial agreement must be reached with the Wolfsburg supervisory board around boss Frank Witter. Schäfer would then sign in Leipzig.

Rosen’s future in Sinsheim is open

VfL, in turn, is still looking for a successor to the former sports director. The name Sami Khedira came up in Wolfsburg, but the 2014 world champion would probably not yet be considered for the top management position. In contrast to Hoffenheim managing director Alexander Rosen, whose future in Sinsheim is open. The 45-year-old is being traded more intensively in the VfL environment.
