Phillies Pitcher Michael Lorenzen Throws Historic Game Without a Run or Hit in Victory Over Nationals

Phillies pitcher Michael Lorenzen went one game without a run or hit in a 7-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

The 31-year-old right-hander had five batters in the mitt to pull off the feat. It’s the 14th game without a run or hit in Pennsylvania’s organizational history.

“It was the most cool of my career. I haven’t had a ton of strikeouts,” Lorenzen said. When you throw, the batted balls can go all over the place. I simply had the grace of God. »

Lorenzen was in his second start with the Phillies, having been acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the July 31 trade deadline. At his first appearance with Philly on August 3, the Gunner had gone eight innings against the Miami Marlins, which was a season high for him.

He became the first Phillies pitcher to go without a run or hit since 2015 (Cole Hamels, July 25). Hamels retired last week.

“The energy from the fans was incredible going into the seventh, eighth and ninth innings,” Lorenzen said. I had never felt something so strong in my career. They transported me. »

It was the first game of its kind suffered by the Nationals in 19 years since being established in Washington, following the departure of Montreal.

A circuit at its first presence

Wednesday night’s duel between the Phillies and the Nationals was also the scene of two other noteworthy stories. Weston Wilson fulfilled a boyhood dream as he played his first major league game with the Phillies.

And like a fairy tale, the 28-year-old American celebrated his first at bat with a second-inning homer, much to the delight of friends and family gathered at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Her father was even in tears; what moment!

It’s also the first time since 1998 that a Phillies player has hit a home run on his first career at bat.

The story is all the more magical since Wilson has been resilient, having spent the last seven seasons in the minor leagues. In 100 Triple-A games with Lehigh Valley, the left fielder hit 25 homers and drove in 69 runs.

Overall, the Phillies’ start to the game was explosive. In the first inning, Nick Castellanos hit a long three-pointer, then the Phillies No. 8 came back with another solo bomb in the third inning. By the same token, Castellanos reached the mark of 200 career home runs.

The two teams will meet again Thursday evening for the fourth match of the series, led 2 to 1 by the locals.
