It took Manchester United more than six months to discuss Mason Greenwood’s future. British prosecutors dropped the serious allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercion against England’s former international in February 2023, three and a half months after the indictment. Not because the images and audio files posted to Instagram in January 2022, showing Greenwood’s girlfriend bruised and having a split lip and allegedly hearing a worrying conversation between the two, were credibly refuted. But because of the withdrawal of important witnesses and the emergence of new material, there was “no realistic prospect” of a conviction.
